Best Compact Android you can buy in Nov 2016

I recently purchased the White US version of the X Compact for $350 after a great two years with this phone’s grandfather the Z3C. After debating whether to purchase the X Compact, Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and Honor 8, I’m quite happy with my decision to choose the X Compact. There have been some extremely critical reviews of the device – discrediting it as no longer being the compact flagship, but for the niche market that enjoys small-form factor android phones, the device is top of class. This review will highlight some of the unique features that I’ve encountered as well as addressing some of the harsh criticisms I’ve seen in other reviews.

The Sony compact series has always been my go to for an Android phone because of the size and speed. The previous compacts were based on the latest and greatest highest end chip set at the time of their releases. When this phone was announced as having the SD 650, I was more than disappointed so I wrote the phone off. I wasn’t sure which phone to get so I bought an iPhone 7 which lasted a couple weeks until I remembered how restricted ios was. I then had three options for a smallish phone. The Honor 8.. Still a little large, the Google pixel.. Expensive! and the Sony X compact. I had all three within about a month. I kept the X compact. Yep that’s right. I gave up the greatest from Google and a very premium made Honor 8. The reason?

This phone is very sleek and beautiful, it’s fast and does everything it supposed to without lagging. It’s a good phone for the price. However, it’s a big annoying that Sony doesn’t send out headphones with the phone, but that’s alright. It comes with the faster charging wall plug, and I’ve noticed that the phone does charge way faster when it’s connected to the plug. The speakers on this phone aren’t the best, they’re ok though. Not very loud, but they are clear sounding. The cameras are not that good in low light, but everything else about the phone is an A+.

Sony, unfortunately not that popular in US, is known by its high performance cellphones around the world. With Xperia X Compact, it delivers the expected. Even after such long time it still is the highest performing cellphone of its size. (You can check the device specifics from its website). It has a long battery life that lasts more than 1.5 days with normal usage (occasionally watching videos and social media) for at least 6 months. It still lasts quite over a day for me.

I love this phone! I used to own a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and while it served me well for a few years- it was just enormous, and not useful for an active job- especially when you need to reach for your phone and squeeze it out of your pocket. That set me out on my journey for a compact phone. After 2 months (seriously) I whittled it down to the Samsung Alpha vs Sony Xperia X compact- a hard choice. I took a gamble and went with the X. And its a beautiful, responsive phone! The battery lasts as long as my old Note 3 + extended battery (no joke!).

I came from a Galaxy S7 and have been more than pleased with this. For the price being less than half of my S7, the only possible downside I can see is that it’s smaller by a significant margin – but that was part of the reason I bought this. Battery life is about 3 days, even with using it for tethered internet on the bus/train, using it as my audio player for 2-3 hours per day on the bike ride to and from work and walks, etc. If I’m doing a lot of stuff other than that, I can bring it down to two days, but it’s very impressive.

High performance phone, single-hand operation

I insist on high-caliber performance in my phone. I keep searching for one-handed operation. This has been snappy and impressive all around. The OIS and optical zoom give me more camera than I’m used to. The extra bands covered by the radio helps with T-Mobile coverage (AWS12 present in X Compact, missing from Z5 Compact). After two weeks, I’m quite pleased with this, and I disagree with reviews that say the Z5 (from a year ago) is a better option.

Great phone so far. Updated to Android 7.0, great camera, good speed, very nice screen, stereo speakers, and little bloatware. The size is exactly what I was hoping for. I usually unlock, root, and load custom ROMs on my phones, but haven’t had the need on this one.
